The Crucial Role of Energy Efficiency Measures in Commercial Buildings

In an era marked by growing environmental concerns and the urgent need to combat climate change, the route to decarbonisation is on the top of the agenda for businesses and industries around the world.

But before embarking on deploying decarbonisation solutions, businesses need to optimise building and asset efficiency first.  The role of energy efficiency measures in commercial buildings has never been more significant than it is today.

But why should businesses optimise building and asset efficiency before embarking on decarbonisation efforts?

In this blog, our Director Lisa Gingell discusses the building blocks of energy efficiency and its importance on the NetZero journey.

Optimising buildings and the operational performance of the assets within, brings a wealth of business benefits today and sets your building up for the decarbonisation journey.

But first things first - businesses should look at investing in smart building metering and control technologies.  These systems will enable you to remotely manage and maintain your buildings and the assets within, and identify optimisation opportunities whilst maintaining improvements for years to come.

They can:
  • Optimise (control) how your assets perform, their run times and operational aspects; and help you to stay on top of maintenance; as a poorly maintained asset pulls more load.
  • Identify excess energy consumption and waste; ensure assets are not running when the buildings are closed or working against each other such as door heaters and AC cooling systems.
  • Alert on inefficiencies and asset performance deterioration for predictive maintenance and reduced downtime.

The Prerequisite for Decarbonisation

Before undertaking ambitious decarbonisation projects, optimising existing buildings and assets through energy efficiency measures is a prudent approach.

This process allows organisations to identify and rectify inefficiencies, reduce energy consumption and cost, and lay the groundwork for more effective decarbonisation efforts.
  • Maximising Returns: Energy efficiency measures often have relatively short payback periods, generating rapid returns on investment. These savings can then be redirected towards more extensive decarbonisation projects.
  • Diagnostic Insights: Analysing energy consumption patterns during the implementation of energy efficiency measures can provide valuable insights into a building's energy use, informing future decarbonisation strategies.
  • Avoiding Lock-In: Implementing decarbonisation projects without first addressing energy inefficiencies may result in suboptimal outcomes. Energy-efficient buildings provide a better starting point for transitioning to low-carbon systems.

To conclude:

In the journey towards a more sustainable future, energy efficiency measures in commercial buildings emerge as a critical stepping stone.

By optimising existing structures and assets, businesses can reap immediate financial benefits, improve their environmental footprint, and lay the groundwork for successful decarbonisation initiatives.

Embracing energy efficiency not only aligns with global climate goals but also positions organisations as leaders in sustainability, fostering a positive image and attracting like-minded stakeholders.

As the world moves towards a greener tomorrow, prioritising energy efficiency in commercial buildings is an imperative that promises a brighter, more sustainable future for all.
