Earth Day has been educating and mobilising people all over the globe to facilitate the building of a safer and more sustainable world. The first Earth Day saw 20 million American people demonstrate against the environmental impact and human health implications caused by industry. More than 50 years later, this figure has risen to over one billion.
Held on the 22nd of April, today Earth Day is recognised by 192 countries worldwide and has become an event that inspires people to act, unifies voices and prompts meaningful change. For 2022, Earth Day’s key theme is ‘Invest In Our Planet’, a message that encourages innovation and bold action in the quest to restore our planet and ensure a brighter future. While Earth Day is crucial in the education and activation of the global environmental movement, 3-Eight Communications’ extensive experience in the energy efficiency sector means that we recognise that every day counts when tackling climate change. 3-Eight’s founder, Lisa Gingell, has been working in energy efficiency and carbon reduction for 20 years and strives to support businesses in limiting their carbon emissions. “In 2002, we set up an innovative IoT enabled building controls solution that made it possible for businesses to reduce their carbon emissions by at least 30%,” explains Lisa. “Back then, IoT was called Machine to Machine (M2M), and we were ahead of the curve. However, unfortunately, energy efficiency and sustainability were not issues at the forefront of many businesses’ minds. There was a real focus on the financial ROI associated with cutting the operating and energy costs, and only a small percentage of larger businesses were considering the environmental benefits of reducing their carbon emissions.” Over the last two decades, growing environmental consciousness and understanding of the climate crisis have contributed to people in business and domestic settings taking a greater interest in their energy usage. From innovative clean tech developers and renewable off-grid energy suppliers to homeowners ensuring they are running their boilers more efficiently, there is now a recognition that everyone has a role to play in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. “We’re delighted to be able to work with clients who are at the forefront of innovative new solutions and clean tech initiatives that will help homeowners, tenants, businesses and manufacturers across a range of industries reduce or remove their carbon dioxide emissions,” says Lisa. “The energy efficiency sector has changed dramatically in the 20 years that I have been involved with it, and it continues to evolve and progress. This industry truly is helping to fight the good fight this Earth Day – and every other day too.”
