An Instagram post can trigger a political movement; a LinkedIn meme can reach a million people without uttering a word. Yes, you guessed it, visual stimuli are the backbones of communication.
The old saying of a picture paints a thousand words still rings true today and actual rings loud and clear! Humans are wired to process images faster than text, meaning we retain the information for longer apparently our brain processes visuals 60,000 times faster than text. So much of what we think, say and do is triggered by an image, and in an industry (marketing communications) where words are powerful, an infographic can help your business tell your story. The power of marketing communications is in the message you convey to the audience you are speaking to. The words you choose to use frame your tone of voice, influence and reach. But it's not just about words themselves; it's about using pictures and imagery to convey your message, to influence and reach your audience. Marketing communications is at its core about telling stories. Stories about your business, the people within it, your product and the technology behind it, your customers, the journey they are on, the benefits your services and solutions bring to them. The best way to tell a story is with an image. Let me explain... I've been an advocate of the infographic for years and have enjoyed reading The Power of Infographics: Using Pictures to Communicate and Connect with Your Audiences by Mark Smiciklas - it resonated with me this year. In the book, Mark said: "Infographics are your secret weapon. Using them, you can deliver knowledge and ideas visually, so your audiences can understand them quickly - and take action" "visual representations capable of transforming complex data or concepts into intuitive, instant knowledge". I couldn't agree more! A significant part of my work is encouraging and enabling clients to create powerful infographics. They are a great addition to any marketing communications – a powerful asset to help tell your story, influence your audience, showcase your products and services, and make your brand stand out above others.
